The New National Gallery Berlin – A Modernist Masterpiece Reborn

Introduction: Berlin’s Architectural Icon Reopens

After an extensive refurbishment led by renowned British architect David Chipperfield, one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks has reopened — the Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery) on Potsdamer Straße.
Located in the Kulturforum alongside the Berlin State Library and Philharmonie, this mid-century modern gem once again welcomes visitors to explore both its architecture and world-class art collection.

History of the New National Gallery

Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

The New National Gallery was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
Before emigrating to the United States just before World War II, Mies served as the last director of the Bauhaus in Germany, moving the school from Weimar to Dessau and later to Berlin before the Nazis forced its closure.

Mies’ Only Post-War Building in Germany

Completed in 1968, the gallery is the only building Mies designed in Germany after the war. Its striking design — a steel flat roof seemingly floating over floor-to-ceiling glass walls — is a modernist temple for the arts, elevated on a platform like an ancient ceremonial site.

Symbolism in Design: A Rejection of Nazi Architecture

A Contrast to the Nazi “German Style”

The Neue Nationalgalerie’s flat roof directly opposes the steep, “Germanic” roofs favored by Nazi-era architecture. The Nazis saw such roofs as a national style, meant to embody ideological purity.
In contrast, Mies’ work reflects Bauhaus principles — elegance, functionality, openness, and modernity.

From Speer’s Ruins to Modernist Landmark

Before the gallery’s construction, the site still held remnants of Albert Speer’s Nazi-era megaproject to transform Berlin into a world capital. After the war, these structures were demolished, making way for a bold architectural statement that celebrated freedom, modernity, and cultural progress.

A Home for Modern Art

The gallery houses an impressive collection of 20th-century art, featuring works by modernist masters. The transparent glass façade invites visitors inside, blending art with the surrounding cityscape and creating an open, welcoming atmosphere.
